Hey Wink

Well, my dad and I are looking for a car to buy for myself.  I've always been against customizing your car and stuff because I thought it was pointless... till my friends got me hooked!

Just yesterday we were about to purchase a VW 02' golf 2.0 1.8t.. We took it to the shop and it needed a new transmission, oil was leaking, and all this stuff.  The owner was asking 1.6K and my dad just said no.

I don't know too much about cars and I'd love to get a tuner and just customize the car and engine upgrades here and there.

The cars that I like, look wise are...
Skyline R32, (obviously, lol)
Vw Golf TDI or Mk2 Jetta
Honda Hatch EG are alright
Mitsubishi Eclipse (Fast and Furious 1 car)
Lexuis IS300 are alright too

Trying to stay away from Celica, Scion, Ford, and all those kinds of cars.

My budget is around 2 to possibly 4k dollars... I know I really can't get much but I think my grandparents will also pitch in about 2k so let's just say 6,000 total.

I'd get a Skyline but I honestly don't know what to do or get or even consider..

I'm open to all ideas and remember! I want the car to sound soo sick with those exhausts all you guys have here lol, good speed and good looking car.

THANKS!!!

Ok so first what you need to do is go read the  "Where to Start" Guide for New Tuners because there is so much more to it than adding a new muffler.  That will be enough info to get you started. As far as trying to get a Skyline, I don't wanna be a dream killer, but you aren't going to get one for 6k.  If I were you, I'd go with the Eclipse or the hatch Civic.  You should also get a subscription to the magazine if you haven't already; lots of good build ideas in there.  Good luck!

I'm looking at the Eclipse and Hatch, some are alright some look terrible.  I think I'm going to stick with vw golf or vw mk2 jetta.

What are you opinions on those two cars?

I definitely prefer the Golf GTi over the Jetta.  I think they have a better look to them and the Jetta has always struck me as a bit feminine (just my personal opinion though).  The available aftermarket for the two should be pretty similar and same with the performance, so it's really up to you.

its called a 2g eclipse. if you dont like the 2g but you like the eclipse, look into the 3g. that is model year 2000-2005. i own one and i love it.

the golf tdi is a turbo diesel, those have no power, they are a fuel efficient car. now like panda said, the golf gti is great and i like the older 3rd gen jetta vr6(1996-1998.

i'm liking the 3rd gen jetta as well, those are so sick!

what year of golf gti? newer ones or older?

but, if you were to modify it, with a bit of cash, can you make both the golf gti and jetta vr6 fast and have it sounds like power?

If you live in America, you won't be able to buy or legally register a Skyline R32.

actually, you can legally register a R32 but the cost isnt really worth it. after you ship the R32 and pay for the fees to make it legal in the us, you could buy a used R35. you can do a R31 though. they are in the classic law so you can leave them stock. in 4 years the R32 will be a classic and those will be legal to own in stock form also.

Oh okay, that's fair enough.  Why is it illegal to drive in the USA anyway?

Think I'm going to go with a 240sx, hatch, or a VW if we can find one around here in Chicago.. Although I've been told never to buy a car that's been driven in the city because the transmission is usually crap because you know, you're always driving not even a mile and stop, drive and stop constantly so that's something I should keep in mind.  Unless the person who told me was wrong.

smog laws. big government telling us what we can and can not do. these were really put in place in the mid 90s.

Civic Hatchback... so many parts available... It'd be a fun first car anyway.
