So yes I currently own a Miata. Now before you laugh let me tell you what my plan is. I want to swap out my current 1.8l with a 13B from either an Rx-7 FC(87-91) an Rx-7 FD (92-96) or go a bit newer and get a 13B Renesis from an Rx-8. I have done a bit of research and I keep hitting brick walls (for obvious reasons). My question is actually simple but difficult to ask because I am pretty much a noob when it comes to custom tuning. I wish to build a drift machine so which engine would be best suited for such endeavors and would have the best (I dare say) fit to my engine bay?

I do understand the issues with the transmission but I would rather tackle that obstacle when it arises.

I don't know how well a rotary engine would do for drifting... The Renesis has its draw backs, but should do well if taken apart and rebuilt with reliability in mind, but again, for drift, I don't know. I would just stick with building up a piston engine and call it a day. The engine that the Mazda CX7 has is a turbo engine, but it has a slight flaw between cylinder 2 and 3. The wall are to thin. Some mods to eliminate that concern exsist, but I don't know of a single person to look up to answer those questions. Go piston. It's easier. PLus you can get great power and reliability from a piston engine compared to a rotary. Not that you can't get power out of a rotary, but reliability is a concern with one. That's all. Your choice, though.

13B swaps into Miatas have been done before. I myself have never done one before so I don't know how difficult it is but I do know that its not as easy as just dropping it into the engine bay and expecting it to magically work. If you consult a Mazda Enthusiast forum or blog such as RX-7 online you might be able to find a how to guide on how to do the swap or at least get in contact with somebody who has done it and could better help you troubleshoot any problems that pop up.

I wish I got into the rotary engine more when I was a kid. So many guys built them before there was even an import scene back then that I should have had the smarts to at least experiment... Oh well. The early to mid 80s was a fun time. I was more into the 4 banger engines and racing against V8s with my cousins. Yeah, much fun...

A lot of Rx7 and Rx8 are used for drifting and honestly if your using the car for a lot of shows and meets don't expect to get a whole lot of reliability out of the engine.

I have already checked out some forums and all the stories are from 97 Miatas and under. Since the engine bay is a bit larger and the car itself is a little longer as well I would assume it wouldn't be as hard to install. I already understand there is going to be a mass load of fabrication involved with mounting brackets and so on.
Another question is I have looked at a few websites and saw some 13b and 20b with transmissions, but I obviously don't know the company's reputation. So is there a website someone could vouch for?

Heck! I saw a LS1 swap into a Miata once, now that I think of it. It was on this site, I think... It could have been else where also... DANG, I have a poor memory! I did see it, though. If any one can slam a LS1 into a Miata, then a rotary should be a piece of cake. (mods and wiring excluded)

I have a really old photo and unfortunately due to the economy I am forgoing the restoration of the body damage I got in parking lots. Damn house wives driving suv's backing into me after I pull out of my space (bitch didnt even have insurance, and she was in her late 40's). I always get dirty looks like I don't take care of my stuff or I drive like crap but in reality I drive more responsibly than 90% of america. I almost plowed into some old lady crossing traffic i had to slam on my breaks. I was driving around 40 or 42, the limit was 45. I wanted to follow her and give her a piece of my mind but I just kept my cool and kept driving. I have never been in an accident I actually caused. wow this rant went on longer than I expected.

I have a friend that put a klze with a mxl tranny in an rx-7 bellhousing on his 97 mx5... Its different, sounds sweet & is very reliable... Or you could just go the monster miata route (ford 302ci of b6t)... Just throwin' ideas out there cuz if you want to drift hard rotaries are great for weight-distribution & -savings but for reliability you'll need to always have a spare mule engine lying around...
Nothing smells better than that new car scent... Except maybe for ***
