I was inside my house and out of nowhere i heard what i thought was thunder only to go out side and hear this awful awful sound coming from the inside of the car (2003 eclipse gts). After opening the door it sounded as tho the speakers were blown however the car has not been started in at least 2 days and wasn't turned on at the time. To make the very loud thunder-like sound go away i had to finally disconnect the battery cable, whats wrong?

It sounds like a short to me. Im no expert, but id get that checked out by an automotive electrician if there is such a profession. Thats scary. Did you check if there was any recalls on your eclipse? Mandatory or voluntary. Call the Mitsubishi dealer there. He'll probably know much more than me.

No no it prolly wasn't a car jacking. I know they can happen anywhere but i live kinda out in the deep country of Kentucky just surrounded by farm land really. Well when i first heard the sound i woke up and didn't know what it was. At first i thought it was thunder, then  my neighbor out working on his tractor.

I went out side to see what the sound was not with the intent to take vid's or pics.  That's when i noticed this ferocious sound was coming from my car. It sounded like an animal the size of a 3ft tall dog was up and under my car beating up hell. When i unlocked and opened the door was when i found out the sound was coming from my speakers. After that my goal was to just get it to stop. The sound was the loudest i've ever heard my speakers be able to push. I didn't try starting my car, just because i didn't kow what woul happen and didn't want to find out. I poped the hood and disconnected the battery cable, which ended the sound.

I have re-connected the battery cable and the sound has decreased incredibly. To me it sounds like the speakers have busted but again im no expert and have never really heard busted speakers before. I'll reconnect the battery cable again and record the sound and post it.

You do have a short in the speaker with a power supply. I need to know if it's a stock system or an aftermarket radio and speakers with amps and stuff. If it's stock then you should let a qualified tech look into it at a dealer. Dealer techs don't just work on engines and transmissions. I know, because I work at a Ford dealership and that's all I do all day besides oil canges and brakes. The issue may even be with the radio it self. Get it to a dealer, at least. Unless you have a wire schematic to lead you through a diag, I don't see how you will know.

Thanks for the info. I'll take it to the dealer.
It's a stock system but my car came with the infinity series speakers. Also i have no sub or aftermarket amp.

That bad, My guess after working on the speakers on my car is that one of the wires connecting the speaker to the radio to the power might have shorted, but like I said, no real genius. Just know that much from changing out my speakers in my doors after they got water damage :/

Been there with the water damage. It sucks. Especially when you buy a set of TITANIUM coned speakers and they FRY due to an idiot named S12RAPIDO3! LOL! I forgot to install the clear plastic film on the doors and when it rained they got wet. It took a good 4 months before they crapped out, but that was not what I wanted... You live and you learn.

Theyre decent, I mean. If you have a good head unit, get good speakers, but for $20 theyre a hella good deal. I just have the standard 15x4 watt head unit and they get loud. Not quite ear defining, but good. Make my door panels shake.

That's not a bad thing. As long as they work for a bit. You know? I use expensive stuff some times and I cringe at seeing some of the amature installations made by some sound shops. there is one in Norwalk, CT. that should have gone out of buisness a long time ago, but they're still kicking, remarkably. I fixed so many mistakes that they've made over the years that I'm really surprized any one still uses them. People talk. You know? Any way, I won't say who they are to kill them in any way. That'll just stop my buisness all together! LOL! Besides, they're doing a killer job of shooting them selves in the foot, so to speak. LOL!

Yeah, Those speakers I got were even weatherproof, although seem to come unplugged once in a while after off-roading. That though may just be my instillation though. And yeah, Im tempted to rewire my whole truck and take out all the 1980's POS wiring cause iv noticed it likes to break at just the wrong times, but the good thing is that there are no computers to rewire just like the dash, windows, lights and stereo.
