Just bought this nissan 300zx, has a v6 engine, has two pistons that were damaged along with sleeves, I wanted to replace it with a four cyl., first I'd like to know if the same tranny would fit an sr20dett, and if not, what would I need, second, could an sr20dett be made smog legal, if not what other performance engine could be used.

an RB26DETT will bolt directy to the Z32 tranny. (you will need to remove the AWD stuff from the RB26 wiring harness)

Will the RB26DETT pass smog requirements?  Does it have to be that or can the RB20DETT be used as well?  Making carb legal is an issue, since it will be a daily drive car.

RB26 can't pass smog, and I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure the RB20 won't pass either.  If CARB legal is an issue then a good rule to know is that if it wasn't available in the United States then it probably won't pass.

This Nissan 300zx came with an automatic transmission, will RB26/25 still fit?  I'm also interested in converting it to manual tranny.  Will that be too much work involve or is it possible?

just get a full swap. engine and trans for what you want. and lingling is right, if it wasnt origionally sold in america it wont pass cali emissions and smog. Come over east coast or mid west. no inspections whatsoever in some states.

I understand that, but like I said, you could just get the transmission that was meant for the engine or I should say, originally fitted with.

That sounded a bit rude, but im kinda a pureist on that aspect of the car, if the engine's out of a skyline, import a skyline trans. or if the engine's out of a supra corvette ect. Get that car's trans.
