hi i was just wondering what people think about putting a turbo into a 2000 mitsubishi eclipse 2.4L 4 cylinder. any insights would help. I know it will most likely be expensive but will it be worth it? Good idea or Bad idea??

I don't see a down side to installing a turbo. Let's see... better fuel economy, better get up and go, better sound... th e waste gate... YAH!!! (all this is said with HOMER SIMPSONS sound effect when his thoughts are on donuts.)
Just make sure that if you're doing this that you build the engine to handle the turbo upgrade. Too many people install these units with out changing key components and realize too late that they commited a f.u.b.a.r. ( F'd up beyond all recognition) I kept it clean but you know what I mean. More air coming in by force means that all other aspects (hardware) for the air to go through and out must be changed as well. I don't know what your plans are but it will cost money either way.

yeah you mentioned building up the engine before i put that turbo in. I'm kind of new to the whole thing, what would i need like new pistons or a new camshaft, fuel injectors or throttle body???? this is my first car and i guess i really don't know a lot i would appreciate any advice.

Yeah, it will require you to rip the engine apart and replace certain components. Rings definately. I don't know where the compression rate is on a your particular car but it may be higher than you need it to be or maybe it's tired already and in need of a rebuild. For turbos it is better to have it at a lower compression for when higher boost rates are requires, such as reving it up to race some one else on track. There are different rates of compression and you don't want to do the build entirely for race application. the tech you hire to help you will decide according to your needs and expectations. It's gotta stay driveable for the streets. The pistons may not need to be replaced. Again, the tech you will work with can make that determination. Valve train will need to be reworked as well as the valve seat. It will need to breath better for the turbos sake. Cams are definately going to be replaced. I'm not too sure if the crank will need replaceing. It will depend on how good a shape it's in. I suggest a new one to compliment the build. An intake and exhaust will need to be purchased or fabricated, which ever plays well with your pocket, as well and the computer. It will either need to be reflashed or replaced. Even a piggyback controller may be used. There are options. All these things are optional and will be be determined by the tech you plan on letting help you. You can only get so much from a site like this. There are so many products and gadgets out there that no one single advice about this will be right or wrong. It's up to your expectations and what your pocket can handle. It won't be cheap. Plan on spending a lot of your hard earned money. From there, you will have to think of how well your drive train will handle all of those upgrades.
Just be picky about the tech you plan on using. Get advice from your friends and relatives on who they feel is a good tech. Do research on who it is you plan on using. It is your ride and investment that's on the line.

you should just run a t3 or t4 turbo. it is cheaper, close to a grand, runs safe off a stock motor as long as you keep it under about 7 pounds of boost and gains you lke 50 horsepower safely

A sound option but he would still have to lower the compression some. Assuming the engine is in good shape. Either way, refreshing it wouldn't hurt and he could do the changes while in there. You know?

agreed however being his first car and still not quite sure if it's worth it i was more recomending it as a start so he can get a basic turbo in there and not drop 5 grand on it and even more building the motor and wind up regretting it

I stand corrected. Very true indeed.
I just hope he doesn't get turbo happy and have the thing boosting over 7psi. LOL! Time will tell.

LOL! Then it would be on him. He's smart, though, so I doubt it. He has his options. I wish him luck.
