Wheel spacers How to?

I recently sold my TSW wheels to my brother at a killer discounted price just to get rid of the wheels. They fit his 98 Escort ZX2 with a 4X100 bolt pattern size. The original wheels are 15" by 5.5" wide and the TSW rims are 16" by 7.5" wide. I found that they fit perfectly on the front with no obstructions between the strut and the tire. The same could not be said of the rears, though. I needed to buy spacers and all the info regarding the measuring was vague. So I measured from the mounting face that touches the hub to the outer most edge of the wheel on both wheels and got a 1/4" difference. I purchased the 1/4" spacer to install it but now I'm doubting if I measured correctly for the size that I purchased.
Any way, my question is if there is any other way to measure for a spacer that is accurate I would love to know it. This is a first for me and I don't want to screw it up. I can always go back and return the spacers for a 3/8" spacer, if needed, but my only concern is to know an accurate method of getting the correct size spacer, for the future. Thanks to any one that can get that info for me.
