zI've had a 01' Kia Spectra for about almost a year now.It was given to me as a birthday present by my dad.Its a good starter car,but I wanna bring up the HP it has.Its putting out about 130 now and I wanna get it up to 190-200 HP.I'm really tight on money as well.Is there anything I can do to bring up the HP on it,without spending any or if not just a little bit of money?Anything I can take out myself?Anything with the engine or anything I can edit?

And I already took out a couple parts to make the car more light weight,so don't suggest that plz.

I would just start with some BPU...Exhaust, intake, maybe a header, and I would suguest staying away from all the cheap, no name brands...but thats just me.

I'm not going to sound condescending towards your car 'cause I respect that you would want to do this to it! Some will say that it's a beater car and they would be right to say so due to the manufacturer that it is. But you are serious and because of that deserve a serious answer.
Kia, as far as I know, does not have a race division or a research and developement for performance upgrades as the type you might be looking for so any thing you want to do, unfortunately, will cost you some duckets. It may end up costing you beyond your budget to do this 'cause there is really nothing out there for Kia. You're actually the first person brave enough to even try this on a Kia. Well. I don't know if you're the first or not but it's not common to build one. I haven't seen any as of yet that would be worthy of tuning. Not to say that it's impossible but it will be hard and costly. You may need to get involved in knowing some one that knows more about it or even trying to go to the dealer to see what is available. I think that every thing is going to be custom made for it due to a lack of manufactured parts for it. I could say good luck to you right about now but I'm not. You will have to get your hands extremely dirty to find any thing viable for performance. I wouldn't mind seeing some thing different for a change. Even if it is a Kia! On the real, though, you may want to consider what kind of money it will take to get what you want 'cause it will only be as possible as the parts that are available for it. Now I will say "Good Luck". Do try the dealer first, though, you may get lucky!

Anyone else out there that can help?

Any non-costly bumps?

Dude, besides the usual stuff like an intake and and exhaust... there really isn't much! Sorry, I've been looking for you and if you really want some cojones for your ride it's going to cost you some money to get it... And an intake and exhaust is only good for 3 to 5 horses minimum! Any more would require machining the head to port match the intake and exhaust manifolds, valve work to get full use of the port match, etc., etc.! That's just the beggining and if you do one thing you have to do another just to compliment and get use of the parts installed... I don't know what else any one could reccomend that wouldn't demand money!!! Good luck, though!

Blackmonkey, there doesn't need to be a race division of a company to get aftermarket parts. For example, my VR-4 does not have ANY mitsubishi ralliart parts. ( Mitsu's "race" division )

Vetiver. Unfortunately, nothing you can do, short of spending some money will improve the HP of your car to ~200. You could do nitrous, but I would not recommend it on your car for a couple of reasons. 1 being that a good setup with a bottle warmer, window switch, etc will end up costing you a decent amount. ( Not expensive in the realm of modifying cars, but probably more than you were thinking of spending. )

Intake, and exhaust are your cheapest options, but won't gain you much at all.

Sorry, but that truly is the truth without spending some money, and even if you had money and wanted to make it fast, I would definitely recommend another vehicle.

And what did I say that was different from whay you said? Other than implanting the idea of nitrous and leaving at that. Nitrous use still requires the engine internals to be upgraded so that they can handle all those new forces that get added! Things wear that much faster when that matter is not addressed! And to imply that real horses don't require real money? Damned, the 6 grand that I put into my rav4 must have been a waste. From 147hp to 250hp and 225lbft of torgue is good numbers to me! I could get more, but I'm inspired to go bigger with the engine... a 2JZ swap!! Lots of work... for the future, though. Got too many bills to get rid of first!
Again, BOOsted, I'm done. You have no real ammo against me not knowing any thing. All you did was to slightly add to what I said to this dude! Wow!

I'm sorry but I have to back up what B00Sted and BM said. HP = Money. Just like anything else, if you want a powerful computer, you need $$, if you want a nice house, you need $$. Money is directly proportional to how much poewer you're going ot get out of your car. The only way to achieve better gains on a car without paying for it, is through sponsorships and alot of custom fabrication, which in the end will end up costing you alot of time and effort on your part anyways. As for Kias, this isn't really an option because no one customizes Kias.

You should consider selling that vehicle or buying a cheap tuner car. You need to understand that your Kia wasn't designed to be a race car in any way shape or form. There are too many parts that require upgrading or complete replacement, and you'd be saving time and effort by just puchasing an older slightly more beat up import or domestic to work on tuning.

I know it's not what most people in your position want to hear at a time in their life when money is tight and time is usually devoted to bettering their education, but you're probably better off waiting until you get more disposable income to start on tuning.

"D", you said what I meant, but in a different way. Thanks for the input! It's much appreciated.
vetiver, I hope you see what we mean. No one can keep you from doing what you want but, realistically, you have to count your options and see what's more viable for your needs. And BOOsted is right about not every car having a sport division for parts.
A little horse gain is better than nothing with what you've done so far. It's not the "OH MY Lord" type of power gains, but it's some thing none the less.

*daydreaming about a 2JZ swap in a Kia Spectra*

Sh!t...people will drop a 2JZ in just about anything these days.
lol

I/H/E definitely your best bet.
I'm sure there's always an FI option, but turbo kits and SC generally cost an arm and a tit.

Good luck, and I would say your best way to get 200hp in a Kia Spectra, would be to strap an SRT-4 to your hood and call it a day!

I crack me up.

Hey 2JZ_FTMFW, you are a funny cat! I like reading your responses. I was thinking of swapping a 2JZ engine into my Rav4, just for kicks! Of course, I need to finish one project and catch up with bills first! What do you think of that crazyness? It certainly would be different!!
