Really depends on what you want to do. What are you looking to improve?
Performance, Handling, etc?
Basic performance mods are intake, headers, exhaust. If you want to go a bit more you can do gears in the rear end. ( Upgrade to 3.73's ) That should be good for a little pick up and go.

BOOsted, is right about that but if you don't know too much as you say, it may need to be touched by some one knowledgeable and that you can trust... It's an "84", so the condition of the engine needs to be assessed as well as the transmission. Got to make it reliable before you start putting on upgrades! I don't know if you've done that already, just putting it in there for safetys sake!lol! You don't want to drive for a while with it and all of sudden begin to hear a knocking out of one of the cylinders! Better fore-warned than fore-lorned... (I hope I said that right...!)
![]() There's plenty out there for this platform and it's not a bad looking ride as well. Just have to look a little... There is no competition here, BOOsted! you can't say that I'm wrong about what I just wrote him. A 3.73? Cool, assuming the engine is in good enough shape for the year that it is to fully use that gear ratio. I'm not dissagreeing with you, just adding to his much needed info. General info is good but insuring that he makes good descisions before he starts slapping on parts will go further for him to have a nice ride he will like for a while. He does have a real nice old school ride! Right?

He didn't ask what repairs should he do Blackmonkey. He asked how could he enhance his car. I mentioned some things he could do for his performance. Nothing I said was incorrect. It's not my job to tell him he should make sure the car isn't falling apart before he starts doing basic modifications. None of what I listed would damage anything. If he has issues, it would of course be detrimental to add mods. I'm assuming the car runs, drives, and can go WOT, or else he wouldn't be posting, "How can I enhance my car". Repairs aren't enhancements.
As for 3.73 gears, the engine will not care. He's changing his gear ratio, as long as the car isn't a pile of trash and can go WOT, it'll be faster with the 3.73's.
The transmission for example. I'm sure he'd know if it was bad. It's a 5 speed, or did you miss that? I highly doubt anything other than synchros would be broken on it, or else he'd know very quickly. ( IE: input shaft bearing, gear damaged, forks bent / damaged, etc. )

correct your 305 is a throttle body injected Iroc-z
things you can do are a BBK throttle body, port matched intake manifold, port and polish the heads, hooker headers, like stated abouve #.73 gears, but i belive you have a 12 bolt rear end?
you might want to look into a rear axle swap (ford 9" being the most expensive, solid route you can go......)
after that maybe a 350 swap? LOL
big block maybe? :P
but ya there are all sorts of things you can do to an iroc
my friend had one in highschool (like 2 years ago) before he joined the marines, and got him self a grand national
he spent 8 grand on it apprenalty it was 1/63 version of the iroc-z produced in 1987 with the 4 wd discs, and shorter gear ratio stock.
he sold that and now has an 87 grand national which is a turbo 6 but it was faster than the camaro ever was LOL

BOOsted, I'm not going against you on this! You're absolutely right assuming how you did. BUT he said that he doesn't know much about cars so my info was not wrong as well. We are both heading towards the same goal and butting heads while doing it. CHILL!! I'm not fighting you on this. This dude just needs as much info as possible and since you and I, and civic.slow, are the only ones willing to respond to him, he needs to get good info where possible. Again, I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just making sure that he knows what he's getting into before he goes and slaps parts on! And a maintenance/repair check is an enhancement if the car isn't running well to begin with. He didn't mention that and I can't assume that it did have work done. You know how people are... some will tell you that they just had some thing done and when you dig deeper you find out that "just done" was a year or two ago! I know you've come across that!

Hey JJRvA, BOOsted, civic.slow and I only have your best interest at heart. We are all giving you much needed info and any route you take will need work to determine what works well for your pocket. Money does talk to you if you're not making enough and with the way things are in todays economy, no one can blame you if you wait before building your ride. Work out a plan of attack for the projects you have in mind and see where those plans take you. Civic.slow has some good ideas for your car!

It's one of the main reasons why I suggested geting the car in capeable hands. Some one you can trust and guide you in making the right choices with your needs in mind. Every one here who has given you advice, and those that will give you advice in the future, will definately give you good advice or routs to take but learning about your car will take you further. Don't take on some thing your self if you don't know too much about it. Stuff like tune ups and oil changes is a good start for learning those basics. The only thing that keeps a car going and going is maintenance. Once you get deeper into knowing more about engines and stuff you'll se what I mean. Mean time, find a good tech that you know and trust to work on your car. It's a cool ride and it would be a shame to lose it due to poor care.
