Ideas for my next vehicle?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post...

Long story short.. Someone didn't look both ways before attempting to cross the road, and T-boned my 89 Mustang GT. Totaling it. So i need a new car.

I'm having trouble deciding though. I was thinking of a 2g Eclipse, but i hear they are a tad unreliable. I really like how the 2g looks (although, i cannot stand the 3g), But i really don't know much past the looks. I like Hatchbacks for some reason, and the 2g eclipse just looks pretty nice with the right mods.

I'm looking for something a little fast (or capable of attaining it with little work). The car is going to be a daily driver, So i don't need something that will run 10s on the track...Just something that can look good and have the performance to back it up.

Oh.. and it has to be either under 5K from a private party, Or under 10K from a used dealership (in other words, If its a 10K car and not easy to find... Then i really have no chance).

Sorry to come bug people and ask such a question. I loved my mustang, But i was in the market for a new (2nd) car prior to the wreck. I would buy a new Domestic RWD, But the mustang was crap in the winter (loved to fishtail). I plan on buying a second car in 6 months or so, for the purpose of building into something fun... The car i pick now will be modded as little as possible, and be the daily driver.

Oh..lastly, I'm not brand loyal at all.. I will consider anything (although.. Civics are out. Way too many of them out there.)

Again, Sorry if this is an improper post.

Nothing is improper when looking for ideas! As far as a sporty daily driver...? There are plenty to chooses from in the import scene. The only thing is that if you are looking for power and fun factor you may as well look for a sport car. There are plenty of 280Zs and Supras and 4cyl. monsters to be found on the net and at dealers. You just need to commit to one that you want and go from there. Any used car that you get will need some sort of severe maintenance done to bring it back to road worthyness. That's just how that is, unfortunately. Previous owners just don't care when they turn or trade cars in so there's always some hidden repair that needs to be done. Any way, if you plan on spending $10K at a dealership for a used car you may as well look for the car that you want, regardless, and stay within that budget. It's totally up to you what you want, no one can advise you on what taste you may have. As they say, to each his own! Dig? Look for what you want and stay within your budget... Said that twice, I think... Yup, I did!
And as far as getting more horses on what you may get... It takes money to get real horses under the hood, and you get what you pay for! I hope that this advice helps you decide to "YOUR" taste and not any one elses. Like food, you get what you want. Right?

Performance upgrades for the cavalier are hard to get but not impossible, champ! Try finding a cobalt or a similar newer body style in that GM format, assuming that you want to stay with GM. Then visit JEGS or SUMMIT RACING and see what you can get for it. Also try to use the search bar with a specific need and shop around with what ever sites pop up on the list of sites.
Making the car look good is ok but what you will find for the domestic market is gaudy and kind of silly looking. Stay simple with the exterior design... the simpler the look the cleaner and more stylish it will be. It seems that is what is popular in the scene today... clean and sharp! Stay realistic with power gais as the engines that come in those stock formats are not made to handle too much gains. If you're looking for street credibility rebuilding with proper upgrades will certainly be the way to go. It takes money to get horses and you get what you pay for!

the funny part about the cobalt is that it has the same motor as the cavalier 2.2 ecotech so wouldn't the performence parts for the cobalt also work on the cavalier?

I'm also goin to put a twin turbo and a supercharger (to eliminate turbolag) but would a body kit be my first mod or should i start with the motor?

I stand corrected and am humbled! You're right! The Cobalt is a prettyer body style, though. It's all up to your taste at this point. They have super charger kits for it but you still have to prep the internals with performance stuff to handle that kind of up grade.
I haven't worked on GM cars for a bit so please forgive the flubs to certain details.

To save weight you might want to consider an electronic timer for the turbo to eliminate some lag time. A combo super charger and turbo sound exotic but the charger will rob you of top end power due to it being belt driven. Unless they make electronic devices that shut the pulley off to the charger like an a.c. compressor clutch so that when you hit higher RPM ranges you're not kept from reaching your hp potentials. Do some research first so that you're not faced with too much technology that is not needed. I do like the way you're thinking, though! INNOVATE, baby!!!

I would do the engine up grades and tune it with a qualified tech in that field of tuning. There's the every day service tech and the specialty tuner tech! It's a crap shoot so be wary of those that claim alot with nothing to show for it. A clean shop does not mean a good shop and vice verse! And as far as those parts that you want, you will have to find what you want on the search bar and shop around in what ever site pops up. That's what I've been doing for my 87 200sx. Most of the things have been fabricated but as far as the engine goes it has been a fabricators nightmare. I swapped in an RB engine from the original ca20e, 4cyl that was in there. I even had to modify where the engine sat on the frame, with my fabficator, and sat it back further in the chassis.
I converted a 91 Sentra to rear wheel as well about three years back for my personal use. That was a lot of work and money as well. Nothing is impossible, it just takes a lot of work and money and man hours to do. I'll get back to you on that Cav.
