I would suggest getting a newer style, starting at around 1996 or newer. They are OBDII capable for diagnosis and testing. The good thing is that most of the engine hardware, engine block and head, is more reliable than in previous years and the only thing that goes bad is in the electronic dept. The pre "96" vehicles are as easy, though, and any one will be able to diagnose and repair equally. It is in the parts reliability that gets iffy the older a vehicle gets. It's just some thing to keep in mind when considering an older vehicle. It's your money, though, and my advice, or any one else for that matter, should not keep you from getting what's in your heart of hearts. Have fun searching and don't limit your self to just Honda! There are many more worthy Japanese imports to look at with as much quality and fun factor as Honda!

I understand completely, nengun! But for as many cars as they've built over the years I don't think that this is a major problem. A recall notice is all they have to do and schedule repairs accordingly. Honda has had a good reputation and I don't think that one issue involving the shifter popping out is going to put them out of having a good reputation. American cars have been as bad for longer and people still keep buying them. I've worked for Ford dealerships on occasion and have done a whole lot more recall repairs on them, overall, than on any Japanese car that I ever worked on. No car is immune to a problems and recalls, but to focus on this one issue is redundant and pointless. It doesn't take away from the over all quality of the vehicle.

I have a 99 and love it. I recomend a 96 - 00 model.

I'll have to recommend an 06 or newer, but I'm guessing you're limited by your current funds, so if you get a Civic, go with the 6th gen instead of 5th gen. If you're tight on money, I'd suggest not modding it, as intake, exhaust, headers will only give you a small gain in power, and you'd probably be better of with an old 240sx, or if you're more concerned with power, you can get an old Supra with a 7M motor. An old Supra can be picked up for about 2k, and is just as reliable as a Civic. You'll learn alot more, and get to work on a turbo engine.

I had a 94, I liked the way these looked compared to the 96s, just because I thought the shape of the headlights looked better. I never built that thing up though cause it was a DX and because that thing was the only car my family had for like 7 years and we ran that thing ragged. But hey despite what we put it through that thing still ran pretty smooth.
