If you don't want to be a ricer, I suggest buying a car that falls under a different category. Buying any economy import car and modifying it is pretty much guaranteeing yourself a ricer designation from at least somebody. If you want to avoid the stigma of import tuners, get a higher end car and VIP it, or get a domestic and modify it instead.

If you're set on buying one of the above, avoid the following:

altezza taillights
99.9% of all exhausts and intakes on the market
body kits
any neon/LED lighting of any kind
low-end speaker/subwoofer configurations
exterior modifications of any kind
excessively large or small rims
painting your brake calipers (or worse, DRUMS) red
painting stock hubcaps, or stock rims with spray paint
doing any "cheap DIYs" of any kind unless you really know what youre doing

If you want to gain the approval of other tuners, focus on engine mods first. Once you know your way around an engine bay and have some reputable numbers, consider trading up to a better car. Buying a low end vehicle and attempting to turn it into a super car isn't a wise investment.

Also, define "been around souped up cars n wut not". Millions of people attend various auto exhibitions every year. Seeing show cars and making one are two completely different things. If you don't have a LARGE disposable income, I highly recommend just doing a couple light taseful mods to your future car. Don't try to compete with shops and rich kids who can drop anywhere between 2 to 10 thousand dollars into their car every month.

Hope that helps a bit.

please dont get an integra...and your question is too vague you cant just ask what to get, you need to have plans for istance what is the car going to be for, street (which i assume), showoff, drift and etc. Plus simply if you dont want to be known as a ricer just dont act like one or build your car like one would. From what you said though i'd say all choices are good except for the integra its not that good...and also it usually is associated with "ricers". But id advise the eclipse (GSX) or the prelude...the eclipse a bit more because parts are easier to find, but the prelude's good too, just dont be tempted to start buying many cosmetic upgrades and disregarding your car's performance.

"Ricer" is just a mentality and attitude, although having an ill-modified low-end Japanese car surely helps.

To guarantee that no one will ever call you a ricer, do the following and you should be fine.

NOTE: This advice is not in any way aimed at the show-car crowd. I respect those guys, and there is a definite line between rice and a clean show-car, but I'll leave that up to others to decide. This guide is for the daily-driver street car guy who doesn't want to be ricey. There, now that I said that lets continue..

------ PUCSICSAL'S ANTI-RICER GUIDE -------

1.Absoultely NO crap-talking or bragging to anyone about your car. Period.. (You are a rookie.. Crap-talking can wait until you actually have experience and know what your talking about, AND have a fast car to back it up).

2. Absolutely NO cosmetic upgrades inside, or outside.. Face it, you will be modifying a low-end, mass produced car and no matter how genuine and unique you think your "cool new part is", it's not.. Everyones already seen it on dozens/hundreds of other cars and its already old. (Note: wheels/suspension aren't cosmetic by any means.. Lightweight 16 or 17" wheels with good tires and good suspension are the best upgrade you can do to enjoy better handling and looks for the money! Just don't get chrome, and also black rims with chrome lip are also long past their glory days.) Remember, only install parts that provide a legitimate performance upgrade. EXAMPLES: LED windshield sprayers are just straight rice no matter what.. "JDM yellow" Fog lights are a waste unless you live in Frisco and deal with fog every morning or you religiously run the canyons and yellow helps you see oncoming lights easier etc. Park-bench size aluminum wings make no difference unless you are cornering around the Nurburgring at 100+ mph. Body kits are also straight rice and only cater to the show car market who can actually install one correctly.

3. That brings me to my third point: Absolutly no bodykits, wings, aero spoliers, etc. Ever. I can deal with a nice lip on a stock bumper, but no home-depot unpainted lips please! And ABSOLUTELY NO altezza/ silver lights, clear corners or blue/violet replacement lights...ever.. If you really must, you can upgrade to HID, but please purchase a new housing with projectors.. Installing HIDs into regular reflector lights will just blind the crap out of everyone and create a safety hazard and might get you a ticket.

4. Don't street race like a moron.. I know every guy needs the adrenaline rush of an illegal, impromptu race here and there, but please keep it safe and don't think that you will be able to outpace an M3 or Ferarri just with your intake and exhaust.. Once you start seriously building you NA engine with internals, or turboing it, some nicer cars will easily be your prey, but not just yet..

wow and i thought I was "anti ricer"......i totally agree with everything except the bodykit stuff...its true one shouldnt get random bodykits and aero's, theyre a waste of money and the first step on the path to "ricers" (man im so sick of saying that it sounds so derogatory). ANyway there are exceptiions, for instance if you have enough money, and you have a Good car...not a civic...Veilside fortune kits r cool. I dont think theyre performance geared but they look the best.....staring at veilside fortune NSX's makes me drool sometimes.
