The best thing to do would be to start reading up on car parts.  There is tons of info out there explaining how things work and why.  Hanging around and participating on car forums is always a big help.  And last if you have a car of your own, start working on it yourself.

nothing helps like hands on .. i was a young boy when my dad showed me how to change oil in our minivan .. now here i am swaping motors.. hes regretting that oil change at 12 years old now .. im knocking on his door for help me finish my build funds.. grad that first issue of project car mag give that a look.. i agree that parts information is a huge help.. grad a autozone (chilton or haynes) manual for the car you drive and go thru it and kinda mock fix things on your car. get an idea... also go to howstuffworks.com check things out on there.. they have a great database of info on things like turbos and rotary engines that my mom can even understand... ( little asian lady rough on the english)  good luck man..

Im Asian, I drive a N/A RSX*S, Im not good at math...(I know Im Asian I dont get it), but I know its costing me a lot of money.

take apart your engine and then try to put it back together- you might to buy another car just in case you flub up- but i agree with pirate and hawaiian - HANDS ON- she'll like that (your car that is)
