the c5 and c6 corvettes deserve respect for their performance acheivments - especially the z06 cars.  the powertrain is stellar.  but there is something that they lack, and yes it is an important thing in a car such as this:  substance.  its not really the cack-swinging argument above, but for most people it isnt about absolute performance.  its about how the car overall makes you feel.  very very few people buy top level sports cars as their dedicated track car, so the unfortunate reality is that the performance numbers just become a bragging right.  therefore the numbers sort of become the owner's version of austin power's sweedish made penis enlarger pump lol. the reality is that its very hard to push the envelope when the envelops is so big, so if there's nothing behind the performance, well most people dont really fall in love with the car.

i've worked in the car business for a few years (mostly with european cars) so i see this, and have experienced it myself, all the time.  the mercedes s-class gives you that feeling.  the new sl?  not really.  the last gen 740i sport was a terrific car.  you never wanted to stop driving it.  same with a miata.  or a mk2 16v gti.  and you'd have to hold a gun to a type-993 owner's head to get him to sell it.  but the 996?  well not really (but which is faster??).  and the corvette?  nope.  they aren't like the old ones.  despite their world class performance, the corvette is really a piece of crap with a great engine.  (i have not spent any time around a c6 yet).

And I was talking about 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Corvette, it hadn't really had that many accomplishments in the past 45 years in comparison scale to all of Europes cars that are running in the race.  You try comparing the new Corvette to Ferrari's, well let me just up the anti a little and say Enzo...  Now what does Corvette have on Ferrari... Nothing?  I didn't think so.

EDIT: Mr. Antomattei, would you care to show us your dyno graph from your "Dyno Test at Super Autobacs Kodaira, Tokyo, Japan" I think that we can get an idea exactly how fast your car is by some numbers and info about your "inspireing" automobile. Then we can see if you truely "walk the walk".

If I am ever in the market for a real sports car, and that will be years away, im taking a Corvette for a spin first. I can see what your saying about new cars lacking something. Ive driven an 03 Monte Carlo 'SS', and the car just lacked personality. Nothing offensive, or stand out about it. I would gladly drive my 1988 Celica ST over it. Just something about it makes me like it.

Umm... u'd have to be on crack to only think a skyline is a good car... im so sick of all these damned pre-pubecent children getting all hyped 'omg, omg, omg, a skyline... woo.. hoo...' ugh, If i was a mod i'd close every single thread that said ANYTHING like 'omg, skylines r teh rox0rs' unless it was commenting on how nice someones skyline looks ect... SKYLINES ARENT THAT GREAT!!!!!!!!

RX7's are *** sweet cars, light as hell, handle like they're on rails, ect. in fact, mazda had made two VERY good autocross cars (omfg, yes, something OTHER than 1/4 mile racing)... hows about a Miata? If you dont respect a miata then you shouldnt touch a car, seriously. I watched one run only 3.2 seconds slower than a built up F1/Indy styled kit car (basically a go-kart with a GIXXER engine)... and the miata had NO engine performance other than intake/exhaust... granted it had some nice coil-overs. but nothing even touched that cars time.

Skylines are great cars, id love to own one, but they definitely are overrated. So many people blindly think theyre the ultimate car when there are better machines out there.

I havent driven a C6 Z06, but I did get the privelege of driving a few C5s, and one 2002 Z06. I think the thing it lacks is quality. GMs engineers did their finest with the engine and chassis, but the bean-counters got the interior. The car runs like those several times its price, but feels like a 20k car on the inside.
